DescriptionMontgri Nature Park, Lower Ter and Medes Islands are composed of three areas, which are the same that the name given before.
· Montgri: Corresponds to the part above the litroral of Medes Islands.
· Medes Islands: Includes the emerged part of the Medes Islands. His main interest lies in the underwater, which is included in the ZEPIM (protection at European level of the waters of the Mediterranean, in areas with a special interest).
· Lower Ter: part comprising the area corresponding to the marshes of the Baix Empordà.
Soaking in the Medes Islands and open your eyes is to discover a new world full of life, with a multitude of organisms that lives oblivious to what happens outside of the water.
Its coastal location and interest had this enclave from the point of view of the tourist operation, needed a number of protections to ensure the protection of the landscape and existing ecosystems to the potential human impact.
There have been initiatives since 1969 with the aim of preserving this area of Catalonia, but it was not until the year 1983 that legislated to prohibit fishing and marine resource exploitation.
Later in 1992 Montgri was added to the buffer zones of the park, this area corresponds to the landmass in the territory of the Medes Islands, and a portion of the Baix Empordà Aigüamolls (part corresponent the Baix Ter).
Not until 2010 that these three spaces unify their rules for protection and performance, constituting the park as we know it today, Montgrí Natural Park, Medes Islands and Baix Ter.
Montgri Nature Park, Lower Ter Medes and with a total length of approximately 8.200ha, is framed in a landscape much higher.
This landscape is constituted by the beauty of the Baix Empordà, with varied Mediterranean landscape, this allows us to find beauty interspersed Mediterranean forests with diverse coves facing the sea.
From the Montgrí we can contemplate a landscape, with high hills that in no case exceed 350 meters. The relationship of these plateaus with the coast are especially rugged leading to all kinds of bays, gulfs, caves, slopes that make visiting this place will always be a place to be able to surprise you with its beauty and startle.
But undoubtedly the most interesting and prominent landscape of the park is that of the Medes Islands, composed of seven islets, located about 1km away from the coast.
The most interesting of these islets we found under the sea with a great diversity of marine species to which we must add the beauty of these islands underwater walls full of life and color.
The natural park is protected on both terrestrial and marine habitats, but seeks to preserve a very concrete way of existing habitats in the Medes Islands.
The forest habitats Montgri massif, are dominated by scrubland and pine forests of white pine. The culture of this area is primarily aimed at the olive trees, being one of the usual scenery of the area.
The habitats found in the land area of the Balearic Medes, are dominated by a vegetation of shrubs and bushes and grasses adapted to saline soils.
If we go into the depths of the Islands we find six undersea habitats of outstanding interest.
These habitats reference from underwater plants like algae bright and dim algae, which have a central role in feeding the marine life. Another habitat is constituted by the grass Posidonia, which provides shelter and food for a multitude of species.
With regard to the setoff found trottoir ledge (it takes about 75% of the Medes Islands, in their cavities and setoffs live crustaceans, molluscs and worms), and the underwater caves (in its nooks and crannies inhabit all kinds of animal species without the presence of plants)
Finally found the coralline, perhaps the greatest risk habitat in the area, it is from 15 meters depth, highlights the presence of red coral.
In terrestrial vegetation of the islands flowers of extraordinary rarity will be found, the result is in part of the saline character of the islands. Some of these rare plants are flowers in full mid-mountain Mediterranean or rare and concrete plants that can only be found in its cliffs.
The underwater vegetation as previously discussed habitat information is represented by algae and seagrass. The presence of the seaweed is conditioned by elements such as light, temperature and nutrients. Instead the flowering plants are found in the sandy areas where algae can not grow.
In terrestrial species are birds, first we find the marinas (marinete, yellow-legged gull) and other raptors (peregrine falcon, kestrel).
The rugged terrain along the sea, the appearance of abundant benefits caves, home to species such as the bat cave (the largest community of all Catalonia) or the shag, a species can only be found in these environments by the sea.
