What should we know about Bages?
Bages is located in the province of Barcelona and is surrounded by other regions: Solsonès, Berguedà, Osona, Vallès Oriental, Vallès Occidental, Baix Llobregat and Anoia. It is made up of a total of 30 municipalities, the best known of which are: Manresa (capital), Castellbell y Vilar, Castellgalí, Mura and Monistrol de Montserrat.
Regarding the area of the region, in the ranking of the size of the Catalan regions it occupies the position number nine thanks to its 1,092 square kilometers of surface.
In addition, it is also one of the 10 most populated, with approximately 174,000 inhabitants.
Being close to Barcelona, it is a region that is very easy to get to. You can do it using any of the following means of transport:
Car. The main roads that give access to the region are: C-16, C-25, C-37 and C-55.
Bus. There are several bus lines that have Manresa as their origin or destination. What's more, there is a bus company called "Bus Manresa" that bathes the entire capital. Likewise, from the Manresa bus station we can also depart or arrive from Barcelona, Lleida or other cities important Catalan.
Plane. In the event that you live outside of Catalonia, we recommend that you consider using the plane to get there. The Catalan airports are at the following distance: Barcelona-El Prat 75 kilometers, Girona Costa Brava 100 kilometers, Reus-Tarragona 130 kilometers and Lleida 135 kilometers.
Train. Being close to Barcelona, the Manresa station houses different lines. On the one hand, we can find the medium distance line (R12) that starts from Hospitalet de Llobregat and goes to Lleida. On the other hand, it is part of the Barcelona suburban network. Specifically, it is part of the R4 line that starts at San Vicente de Calders and ends at Manresa. These lines are operated by RENFE. In addition, it also has different stations through which the Llobregat-Anoia line passes, operated by the Ferrocarriles de la Generalitat de Catalunya.
It is a region that is located right in the middle part of Catalonia. Therefore, it is part of the central Catalan depression. As remarkable places, we can find forests, the Montserrat massif or the Sant Llorenç del Munt i l'Obac natural park.
The 5 towns that you must visit before leaving
It is a region with great natural landscapes and with many places of interest distributed among its different towns. We recommend the visit of at least the following five:
Manresa. It is the capital of the region and, in addition, it is the most populated municipality in all of central Catalonia. If we like something about the capital, it is that it has many buildings that belong to the cultural heritage. If we had to highlight any of them, we would recommend a visit to the Collegiate Basilica of Santa Maria de la Aurora. It is declared an asset of cultural interest and is part of the historical heritage of Spain. It is in the Gothic style and is also known by the name of "La Seu". In addition to this, we also love the old bridge located at the entrance of Manresa and the San Ignacio cave, declared as a heritage of local interest.
Castellbell y Vilar, in Catalan Castellbell i el Vilar. It is very beautiful to see because it is located between two natural parks and this makes its landscapes exceptional. If we had to highlight a couple of pieces of the historical heritage, we would highlight the Castellbell castle and the church of San Vicente de Castellet.
Castellgalí. This town is known for being in it the remains of a Roman tomb. Specifically, it is the Torre del Breny from the third century. Currently, it is kept in good condition, because it is being restored to avoid deterioration caused by the passage of time.
Mura. Being in a natural park has some very beautiful landscapes. If we had to choose two buildings to visit, we would select the Romanesque-style church of Sant Martí and the castle of Mura. Only some of its walls remain of the latter.
Monistrol de Montserrat. Probably, on a tourist level, it is one of the best known places in the region. It is the town where the Montserrat monastery is located. It is a cultural asset of local interest and, currently, many people are going to visit it. The construction dates from the 11th century and is in Romanesque and Gothic style.
The following also make up the region: Aguilar de Segarra, Avinyó, Artés, Balsareny, Cardona, Talamanca, Sant Vicenç de Castellet, Sant Feliu Sasserra, El Pont de Vilomara i Rocafort, Sant Joan de Vilatorrada, Sallent de Llobregat, Castellfollit del Boix, Navarcles, Castellnou de Bages, Gaià, Súria, Callús, Fonollosa, Sant Salvador de Guardiola, Marganell, Navàs, Sant Mateu de Bages, Sant Fruitós de Bages, Santpedor and Rajadell.
What to do during our stay in the Bages region?
This region gives us the opportunity to carry out different activities. The best known and preferred by tourists are:
Montserrat Massif. It is one of the most important mountains in Catalonia, having an altitude of 1236 meters. This is where the Montserrat monastery is located, which is dedicated mainly to the Virgin of Montserrat. From this massif we can enjoy wonderful views. It can be reached on foot, by cable car, by car or by bus. We recommend the routes on foot or by cable car to fully enjoy the landscapes.
Sant Llorenç del Munt i l'Obac Natural Park. It is a park located in different regions, one of them Bages. In this park they carry out guided tours and different activities that can be interesting for both the elderly and the smallest of the house.
Castles. Like other regions of Catalonia, it has different castles and some of them are very well preserved. In addition to the ones we have already mentioned, you can also visit the following: Calders Castle, Cornert Castle (in Sallent de Llobregat), Cardona Castle or Rajadell Castle.
