What should we know about Selva?

La Selva, also known as the “Comarca del Agua”, although it is located in Girona, has a town in the province of Barcelona. Specifically, the town of Fogás de Tordera is located in the latter province. It borders the following regions: Maresme, Vallés Oriental, Osona, Garrotxa, Gironès and Baix Empordà.

As data of interest we could highlight that it has a total area of approximately 995 square kilometers and that it is made up of 26 municipalities. The best known are: Santa Coloma de Farners (capital), Maçanet de la Selva, Blanes, Caldes de Malavella and Arbúcies.

If you want to travel to this region, you can do so using any of the following means of transport:

Car. There are many roads that cross the region from one side to the other. The most important are: C-35, A-2, AP-7, C-25, C-63 and N-II.

Bus. From Girona airport or from Girona capital we can take buses that go to this region.

Plane. The main airports in Catalonia are, more or less, at the following distance: Gerona-Costa Brava 18 kilometers, Barcelona-El Prat 100 kilometers, Reus-Tarragona 185 kilometers and Lleida 222 kilometers.

Train. La Selva is a region that has numerous train stations. The best known and most used are: Riells and Viabrea - Breda (Barcelona commuter line R2 and medium-distance trains), Massanet - Massanas (Barcelona commuter lines R1 and R2 and medium-distance trains), Riudellots, Caldes de Malavella and Sils (the latter three with medium-distance trains).

The region is located in the northeast of Catalonia and there are some of the best known Catalan mountain ranges, such as: Litoral, Prelitoral and Transversal. Likewise, having a part of the coastline we can also enjoy magnificent beaches and coves such as: Cala Bona, Cala Morisca, Cala Futadera, Playa de Canyelles, Playa de Santa Anna, Playa de Santa Cristina or Playa de Lloret.

The 5 towns that you must visit before leaving

As we have mentioned before, the best known and most visited towns are the following:

Santa Coloma de Farnés, in Catalan Santa Coloma de Farners. It is the capital of the region and has various places of interest. We recommend that you visit the 11th century Romanesque Castle of Farners and the Romanesque monasteries of Sant Pere de Cercada and Sant Salvi de Cladells. It also has a spa, a beautiful church and a thermal leisure center.

Massanet de la Selva, in Catalan Maçanet de la Selva. This municipality has a great history and houses Iberian and Roman remains. In addition, it also has a spectacular castle called Castillo de Torcafaló from approximately 1080 that is very well preserved.

Blanes. Although it is not the capital of the region, it is the most populated municipality and one of the most famous. Being on the coast, it is the vacation destination of many people and is the first municipality on the Costa Brava. You can visit its beautiful beaches or its main places of interest: Iglesia Parroquial de Santa María, Castillo de San Juan or the Marimurtra botanical gardens.

Lloret de Mar. Along with the previous one, it is another of the best-known holiday destinations in the region or even Catalonia. The main beaches and coves in the region are found here: Lloret Beach, Cala de Banys, Cala Sa Caleta, etc. Likewise, it also has beautiful hermitages (for example, that of Alegrías), sanctuaries (for example, that of San Pedro del Bosque) and museums.

Arbucias, in Catalan Arbúcies. We like the well-known castle of Montsoriu in this municipality. It is very well preserved and has been documented since about the year 1000.

In addition to these five municipalities, the following 21 also make up the region: Amer, Breda, Caldes de Malavella, Fogars de la Selva, Riells and Viabrea, Riudellots de la Selva, Sant Hilari Sacalm, Vilobí d'Onyar, Sant Feliu de Buixalleu, Sant Julià del Llor i Bonmatí, Sils, Susqueda, Vidreres, Anglès, Riudarenes, Osor, Massanes, Hostalric, La Cellera de Ter, Tossa de Mar and Brunyola.
