What should we know about Selva?
La Selva, also known as the “Comarca del Agua”, although it is located in Girona, has a town in the province of Barcelona. Specifically, the town of Fogás de Tordera is located in the latter province. It borders the following regions: Maresme, Vallés Oriental, Osona, Garrotxa, Gironès and Baix Empordà.
As data of interest we could highlight that it has a total area of approximately 995 square kilometers and that it is made up of 26 municipalities. The best known are: Santa Coloma de Farners (capital), Maçanet de la Selva, Blanes, Caldes de Malavella and Arbúcies.
If you want to travel to this region, you can do so using any of the following means of transport:
Car. There are many roads that cross the region from one side to the other. The most important are: C-35, A-2, AP-7, C-25, C-63 and N-II.
Bus. From Girona airport or from Girona capital we can take buses that go to this region.
Plane. The main airports in Catalonia are, more or less, at the following distance: Gerona-Costa Brava 18 kilometers, Barcelona-El Prat 100 kilometers, Reus-Tarragona 185 kilometers and Lleida 222 kilometers.
Train. La Selva is a region that has numerous train stations. The best known and most used are: Riells and Viabrea - Breda (Barcelona commuter line R2 and medium-distance trains), Massanet - Massanas (Barcelona commuter lines R1 and R2 and medium-distance trains), Riudellots, Caldes de Malavella and Sils (the latter three with medium-distance trains).
The region is located in the northeast of Catalonia and there are some of the best known Catalan mountain ranges, such as: Litoral, Prelitoral and Transversal. Likewise, having a part of the coastline we can also enjoy magnificent beaches and coves such as: Cala Bona, Cala Morisca, Cala Futadera, Playa de Canyelles, Playa de Santa Anna, Playa de Santa Cristina or Playa de Lloret.
The 5 towns that you must visit before leaving
As we have mentioned before, the best known and most visited towns are the following:
Santa Coloma de Farnés, in Catalan Santa Coloma de Farners. It is the capital of the region and has various places of interest. We recommend that you visit the 11th century Romanesque Castle of Farners and the Romanesque monasteries of Sant Pere de Cercada and Sant Salvi de Cladells. It also has a spa, a beautiful church and a thermal leisure center.
Massanet de la Selva, in Catalan Maçanet de la Selva. This municipality has a great history and houses Iberian and Roman remains. In addition, it also has a spectacular castle called Castillo de Torcafaló from approximately 1080 that is very well preserved.
Blanes. Although it is not the capital of the region, it is the most populated municipality and one of the most famous. Being on the coast, it is the vacation destination of many people and is the first municipality on the Costa Brava. You can visit its beautiful beaches or its main places of interest: Iglesia Parroquial de Santa María, Castillo de San Juan or the Marimurtra botanical gardens.
Lloret de Mar. Along with the previous one, it is another of the best-known holiday destinations in the region or even Catalonia. The main beaches and coves in the region are found here: Lloret Beach, Cala de Banys, Cala Sa Caleta, etc. Likewise, it also has beautiful hermitages (for example, that of Alegrías), sanctuaries (for example, that of San Pedro del Bosque) and museums.
Arbucias, in Catalan Arbúcies. We like the well-known castle of Montsoriu in this municipality. It is very well preserved and has been documented since about the year 1000.
In addition to these five municipalities, the following 21 also make up the region: Amer, Breda, Caldes de Malavella, Fogars de la Selva, Riells and Viabrea, Riudellots de la Selva, Sant Hilari Sacalm, Vilobí d'Onyar, Sant Feliu de Buixalleu, Sant Julià del Llor i Bonmatí, Sils, Susqueda, Vidreres, Anglès, Riudarenes, Osor, Massanes, Hostalric, La Cellera de Ter, Tossa de Mar and Brunyola.
What to do during our stay in the Selva region?
If you are going to spend a few days in La Selva and you don't really know what activities to do, don't worry, we leave you a list with some of the most carried out:
Routes. There are different hiking routes, to be done by mountain bike or to do by car. We would like to highlight the following routes that you can do on foot: Mediterranean Path GR 92, Vía Augusta and Camino del Onyar.
Costa Brava: beaches and coves. The municipalities of Blanes, Lloret de Mar and Tossa de Mar are three of the municipalities that give rise to the Costa Brava. As we have already mentioned, they are the vacation destination of many people who seek to enjoy the Mediterranean. Its best known beaches and coves are: Platja de Blanes, Cala S'Aguia, Playa Santa Cristina (Lloret de Mar) or Cala Pola (Tossa de Mar).
Visit of Castles. When we have highlighted the towns that you should visit we have mentioned some of the best known. In addition to them, we also recommend: Castell d'Hostalric, Castle of Torcafaló (Maçanet de la Selva), Castell de Sant Iscle (Vidreres), Castle of Tossa and Castle of Riells. Some of them are very well preserved or have even been recently restored.
Visit of Museums. It is a region with many museums. The ones we like the most are: Etnológico del Montseny (Arbúcies), Casa de la Palabra (Santa Coloma de Farners), Tossa Municipal Museum, Mediterranean Lighthouse Interpretation Center (Tossa de Mar) and Peasant Museum (Fogars de Jungle).
Spas and recreational places. It is a region that has many spas and spas. The best known are: Spa & Ebano Beauty Center (Lloret de Mar), Balenario Font Vella (Sant Hilari Scalm), Vichy Catalán Spa (Caldes de Malavella) and Termes Orion Spa (Santa Coloma de Farners).
Montseny Natural Park. This natural park is located in three regions: Osona, Vallés Oriental and La Selva. You will be able to enjoy great landscapes and get to know the flora and fauna of the area.
In addition to all these activities, you can also do paragliding flights, catamaran rides, kayaking or other activities related to adventure and leisure.
