What should we know about La Garrotxa?

La Garrotxa , also known by its Spanish name " La Garrocha " or by the motto "the land of volcanoes", is a Catalan region located in the province of Girona . It borders with regions as well known as: Ripollès, Osona or Alto Ampurdán. Likewise, it also borders the Vellaspir region located in the south of France.

The capital of this region is Olot , it is made up of a total of 21 municipalities and has a total area of approximately 735 square kilometers . Some of the most recognized towns are: Las Planas, Besalú, Olot or Vall de Bas .

Referring to its location in Catalonia, it is located to the north , bordering the south of France . We can access this region using different means of transport. The most common methods are:

Car. We can easily access the region from the C-37 road .

Bus. Buses leave from the main nearby cities : Barcelona, Girona, Vic, Ripoll, etc.

Plane. We can get to Barcelona airport (BCN) located 120 kilometers from the region or Girona airport (GRO) located just 29 kilometers away. Like other regions, it is divided into two.

On the one hand, we can find the Alta Garrotxa distinguished by its valleys surrounded by high rocky mountains and, on the other hand, the Baja Garrotxa which is characterized by the valleys formed due to the volcanic activity in the area .

One of the most spectacular and best-known volcanic landscapes in Catalonia and even on the peninsula is located in this region . As we will detail later, the natural park of the La Garrocha Volcanic Zone has approximately 39 volcanoes spread over 153 square kilometers.

In addition, thanks to the fact that the climate is humid and there are different types of land and altitudes, we can find all kinds of flora and fauna .

The 5 towns that you must visit before

If you have ever visited the area, you will have noticed that there are many municipalities of medieval origin that have roads, hermitages and other types of constructions of Romanesque origin.

We believe that you cannot leave the region without having visited one of these towns:

Olot (capital of the region). It is part of the natural park of the Volcanic Zone of La Garrocha and this makes it of great natural interest. If you want to visit a city of volcanoes, it is a must, since it is known by many as " the city of volcanoes ." Likewise, like the rest of the municipalities in the area, it is also known for having a wide natural heritage. You can visit the Convent of Carmen dating from the 16th century or the Casa Gaietà Vila which, although it was built in the 20th century, has medieval details.

Besalú . If we talk about towns with medieval origin, this is one of the best known in the region. Different structures can be clearly seen that correspond to the constructions of the Middle Ages. The best known are: the bridge that crosses the Fluviá river that has a fortified portal, the monastery of San Pedro de Besalú founded in 977, the Jewish baths or miqvé and the church of Hospital de San Julián .

Vall de Bas (La Vall d'en Bas). It is a town that includes, among others, the following towns: El Mallol, Sant Privat d'en Bas, Hostalets d'en Bas, Sant Esteve d'en Bas and Joanetes. All of them are known to have medieval origin and have various architectural structures from the Middle Ages.

San Juan les Fonts (Sant Joan les Fonts). Like Olot, it is part of the natural park of the La Garrocha Volcanic Zone and this makes it have wonderful natural landscapes. If you go to this town, we recommend that you visit the Monastery of San Joan les Fonts, the medieval Bridge and the Canadell Tower.

Las Planas (Les Planes d'Hostoles). This town located between the valleys of Cogolls and Hostoles offers you the possibility of visiting different medieval places such as, for example, the Church of Santa María de les Encines from the year 1155, the Church of San Pedro from the year 1207 or the Church of San Cirstóbal of Cogolls from the year 986.

Also, if what you like are medieval towns, we recommend that you also visit the following: Castellfullit de la Roca (Castellfollit de la Roca) and Santa Pau.

What to do during our stay in the Garrotxa region?

This region is ideal both for people who like natural landscapes formed by volcanoes and for people who want to see buildings from the Middle Ages.

We recommend that you do any of the following activities if you are in the area:

Visit the Natural Park of La Garrocha Volcanic Zone. In this park we can count up to 39 volcanoes among which are Mostacopa and Santa Margarita. At the latter we can ascend to the crater and visit the hermitage of Santa Margarita that is right there. The walk from the parking lot lasts approximately 20 minutes.

Visit medieval towns. As we have been commenting, La Garrotxa is also characterized by its medieval villages. We recommend that you do a route that passes through the different municipalities of Vall de Bas , Castellfullit de la Roca and Santa Pau.

Bicycle routes. If you like to do sport with the mountain bike, we recommend the route that goes from Olot to Sant Esteve d'en Bas. The total route is more or less 10 kilometers and you can do it alone or with your family.

Hiking routes. If you like hiking more than cycling, we recommend the Sant Aniol d'Aguja route. It has a total of 16 kilometers and upon arrival you will see the hermitage of Sant Aniol d'Aguja.

Fly in a balloon. Going on a balloon excursion is one of the best ways to see the natural park and all the volcanoes.

Although these are the activities we like the most, you can also visit farms, do adventure sports, ride horses, travel on the tourist train, see different museums and do escape room activities.
